Paul Fleischman's 1997 children's novella, Seedfolks, tells the story of a diverse community of individuals finding common ground in a neighborhood garden. Through a series of vignettes, the reader learns what brings each character to the communal plot, and by the end of the book, the individual personalities and stories of the amateur gardeners are woven into the communal landscape. It's all very beautiful and heartwarming.
With their new release, Musik för trädgårdar (which is inspired by plants and horticulture and literally translates to "music for gardening"), the Swedish duo of Rickard Jäverling and Henrik von Euler use electro-acoustic instrumentation to create a similar flow. The album is split into ten tracks, and with the exception of a couple, each one feels unique. When combined, however, these distinct pieces create one cohesive composition, just like many hands contributing to a singular garden. Tracks Portal and Minneslund are slow-moving and pensive, while Stigande luft and Tempel are busy and lively, reflecting different ways to interact with an outdoor space. So if you are admiring new growth or getting your hands dirty this spring, whether you are alone or together, Jäverling ◇ von Euler has captured the moment.
